About Central Library

Rotterdam’s Central Library is in the Laurenskwartier district in the city centre. In 1983, the library moved into a modern building on the Hoogstraat road. It is a striking construction with steel tubing running from the roof down the glass frontage. It was designed by the Van den Broek and Bakema architectural practice and is often compared to the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

The library’s total surface area is 24,000 square metres and makes it one of the largest libraries in the Netherlands. It has 12 rooms, each with its own character. These spaces can be used to stage congresses, events or meetings.

The rooms can hold from six to 179 people when set up as theatres. The library theatre is the largest space with a ceiling height of six metres. It has fixed seating and good acoustics. It has its own separate entrance and so can be used outside the library’s opening times.

The Central Hall can also be hired for special occasions. It can accommodate about 500 people, its ceiling height varies and there are pillars and other constructions dotted around the space. It is possible to combine rooms to cater to larger groups of people. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building.

The Central Library is two minutes’ walk from Blaak metro and train station. The Markthal and Kipstraat car parks are a few minutes away by foot.
