Delegation from Wales visits innovative food companies in Rotterdam region

04/12/19

The Netherlands is the second largest exporter of agricultural products in the world. Rotterdam plays a central role in the Netherlands’ agrifood industry. Our strategic location on the river Maas, the port, and the logistical expertise and specialist services make Rotterdam an international agrifood hub. The Rotterdam region is also the food production hub in the Netherlands and the breeding ground for innovation in this sector.

To remain a key player in the agrifood sector, we actively share knowledge about how to approach economic development and energy transition in this sector. On April 2nd, Rotterdam Partners and the Rotterdam Food Cluster, received a delegation of city officials from Wales. The delegation visited innovative food companies in the Rotterdam region, including Cosun Innovation Center, Groothandelsmarkt and Schmidt Zeevis to explore opportunities for cooperation and trade.

Redevelopment of the Groothandelsmarkt

During the visit to the Groothandelsmarkt (‘Wholesale Market’) in Rotterdam, the delegation studied the intricate and urban food system.  The Groothandelsmarkt has ambitious plans for redevelopment and expansion. They aim to be a multifunctional food hub with new activities in food production, e-commerce and last-mile logistics.
