World of Health Care congress is coming to Rotterdam

09/24/18

The international World of Health Care congress (WoHC) will be held in Rotterdam over the next three years. The WoHC focuses on improving international healthcare by using Dutch expertise. Hundreds of international and Dutch professionals in the field of Life Science & Health will be in Rotterdam to share knowledge and expertise and talk about global trends, challenges and opportunities in health care. This week, on the 27th September the first Rotterdam edition of WoHC - which already had two successful previous editions – will be held at the RDM Submarine Wharf in Rotterdam.

WoHC consciously connects to Rotterdam. According to WoHC organizer Task Force Health Care (the platform for the Dutch Life Sciences & Health sector), the city has one of the leading Life Sciences & Health networks in the Netherlands. Rotterdam has a strong life sciences & healthcare industry, with an active innovation ecosystem, various leading science and knowledge institutions, and more than 150 Life Science & Health companies across the greater Rotterdam area.

Erasmus MC: state of the art academic hospital

The life sciences & healthcare community in Rotterdam is a key contributor to the city’s overall innovation ecosystem and urban and regional business climate. Rotterdam’s Erasmus Medical Centre is one of Europe’s leading university medical centres. After years of reconstruction, the internationally renowned Erasmus MC was officially reopened this month and is all about efficiency and optimal patient care, both for admitted patients and at the outpatient clinics. By not committing treatment rooms to specific specialisms but by sharing the available rooms, the use of rooms can be planned more efficiently. Also, by building only single patient rooms in the clinics the risks of infections are reduced and the patients’ comfort is improved. Generally speaking, this reduces the time a patient has to spend in hospital while at the same time the quality of care is enhanced. Extra space is used for public areas. This allows accessible and clear connections between the various buildings and contributes to a kind of ‘medical city within the city’ where spaciousness and transparency make your stay more comfortable.

Besides Erasmus MC and its Technology Transfer Office and Incubator programmes, the medical sector in Rotterdam includes high-end business and research facilities such as the Rotterdam Science Tower with its Life Sciences & Health Hub and the LabHotel.

WoHC sees a lot of room for growth & innovation in the field of Life Science & Health. WoHC is expecting the event to grow rapidly in the coming years and has therefore entered into a three-year partnership with the municipality of Rotterdam.

Medical Delta

Rotterdam is part of the Medical Delta, a medical and technological alliance of Erasmus University Rotterdam,  Erasmus MC, Leiden University, Delft University of Technology, and the Leiden University Medical Centre, plus several public-sector parties, science parks, and over 150 companies. The Medical Delta is the Netherlands’ largest cluster of life science companies, making it a hub for numerous regional and industry crossovers, such as in the area of biotechnology.

Innovation

It is the collaboration between businesses, research and knowledge institutions, and public-sector parties in Rotterdam that is creating a fertile breeding ground for a wide range of medical innovations that are developed here and are finding their way to patients across the globe. Ultimately, the creation of economic value goes hand in hand with the improvement of health and quality of life.
