Health-tech start-up Soom opens new Rotterdam Office

Based in Boston in the United States, Soom’s new office in CIC Rotterdam enables it to more efficiently help medical device manufacturers doing business in Europe comply with the upcoming EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR). These regulations aim to  improve medical device safety and  effectiveness. But for many manufacturers, compliance can be expensive and time-consuming. Soom’s patented platform makes electronic instructions for use (eIFU), a requirement of MDR, simple, cost-effective and futureproof.

“Opening Soom’s doors in Rotterdam, opens Soom up to key elements of the industry,” said Charlie Kim, President and CEO of Soom. “We’re headquartered in Boston, and identified that we needed a centralized location that would better position us to help medical device manufacturers comply with the upcoming EU Medical Device Regulation. Rotterdam is our gateway. It is an emerging hub for the life sciences and medical industry, and we’re now at close quarters with leaders in the industry and the European Commission.”

Soom is the first company to successfully use knowledge graph technology in the healthcare industry. The company’s solutions tackle some of the biggest challenges facing healthcare, including interoperability (i.e., the exchange of information across databases), inequality and the consumerization of healthcare. The genesis of Soom was prompted by Charlie’s personal experience with a medical device recall that threatened the life of his youngest daughter. Now, he’s dedicated to finding new ways to use technology to ensure clarity and confidence in the medical devices that patients, caregivers and healthcare providers use.
