Rotterdam shortlisted for hosting the Global World Energy Congress in 202509/15/20
Rotterdam has been shortlisted as host city for the World Energy Congress in 2025. This was announced by the World Energy Council, London. Rotterdam was put forward in a Dutch bid coordinated by World Energy Council the Netherlands, together with a.o. the City of Rotterdam and Rotterdam Partners, and has the support of WEC Netherlands members (DNV GL, Energie Beheer Nederland, Groningen Seaports, New Energy Coalition, Nouryon, PWC, Rabobank, Shell, Siemens, TNO, Vattenfall and Vopak), the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy and the Port of Rotterdam Authority.
The World Energy Congress is the flagship platform of the World Energy Council, reaching across the public, private and civic sectors to connect and inspire leaders and practitioners from the energy+ value chain. Held every three years since 1924, the Congress is a unique space for the global energy community to catalyse new collaborations and forge new pathways in the energy transition. The most recent edition of the congress was in 2019 when it took place in Dubai. The next edition is scheduled to take place in St. Petersburg in 2022.
Sustainable Energy for all
The Dutch bid with host city Rotterdam carries the theme ‘Sustainable Energy for all’ and highlights why the Netherlands and proposed host city Rotterdam are the right choice as hosts for the 2025 congress. The country’s and city’s unique position and achievements in the centre of European Energy Transition plans as well as Rotterdams’ qualities as congress location with perfect accessibility and connectivity, new and state-of-the-art congress facility Rotterdam Ahoy Convention Centre as the main congress venue and the exciting dynamics of modern day Rotterdam are some of the unique factors put forward in the bid. Jeroen van Hoof (Chair of WEC Netherlands and PwC Global Energy leader) comments; “In the centre of Europe’s Energy Transition is Rotterdam, a multi-cultural city with a developed -energy intensive- economy a leading global harbour, a chemical cluster and logistical function in Europe. . What better place to host the WEC2025 global conference to engage and showcase on how Europe, the Netherlands and Rotterdam have progressed and will pursue in close cooperation with public and commercial partners on its net zero carbon emission ambitions pledged to meet the Paris goals? Thereby stimulating an environmental healthier economy and a better quality of life. We can do so by organising the most green, inclusive and technologically driven WEC energy conference thus far.”
Hybrid congress options
Because of current developments around COVID 19, Rotterdam, together with its partners and stakeholders is actively developing new, hybrid ways of hosting and organising congresses and events, combining physical and virtual elements and the possibilities of new technologies like streaming. This will provide the flexibility required towards 2025 to organise the congress according to the best and latest standards available.
The final decision which city the conference will be hosted will be decided in November by a voting process by WEC’s global members.
