Rotterdam: feeding the world sustainably

08/17/21

The global population keeps growing, our resources keep dwindling. If the global population reaches 9.6 billion by 2050, the equivalent of almost three planets would be required to provide the natural resources needed to sustain current lifestyles. How can we keep feeding billions of people in the most sustainable way possible?

Rotterdam is a frontrunner in the worldwide food economy and takes its role in this global food issue very seriously. Our city follows the UN Sustainable Development Goals on Food, like ‘Zero Hunger’ and ‘Responsible Production and Consumption’. With 8,000 food related businesses and an attractive location in the ‘main port to Europe’, the Rotterdam food industry stimulates employment opportunities, entrepreneurship, innovation and collaboration in the food sector of Rotterdam. The Rotterdam Food Cluster organises projects in association with companies, knowledge institutions, interest groups and authorities, with the aim of job creation, innovation, knowledge sharing and marketing.
