Many reasons to travel to Rotterdam this autumn
From James Bond to Viktor&Rolf, the biggest H&M in Europe, and a unique covered market hall
Both the New York Times and the Rough Guides have touted Rotterdam as one of the must-see cities for 2014. The city is buzzing with activity this autumn. The blockbuster exhibition ‘Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style’ is coming to Kunsthal Rotterdam. Markthal Rotterdam, food walhalla and one of the city’s new architectural icons, will be opening its doors. Fashion-lovers will enjoy ‘The Future of Fashion is Now’, the latest exhibition at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, where the acclaimed autumn 2013 collection by Viktor&Rolf will be exhibited. And the H&M fashion chain will be opening its biggest store in Europe this October, here in Rotterdam.
‘Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style’
Rare costumes, elegant sets, nifty gadgets, familiar props, storyboards and original photos will be on display in the enthralling exhibition entitled ‘Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style’ in Kunsthal Rotterdam. With all the characteristic British glamour and flair we’ve come to expect, the exhibition presents the craftsmanship behind the world’s most famous and best-loved secret agent, James Bond. Across five decades, James Bond has had an indelible impact on art, music, fashion, technology, design and lifestyle.
Accompanied by a lavish use of film clips, Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style offers visitors an unparalleled multimedia experience of fifty years of James Bond film history.
Explore the designs and styles behind the most successful cinematic brand of all time through twelve different settings - from Dr. No in 1962 to Skyfall in 2012. Over 500 unforgettable items are on display, including Roger Moore’s white tuxedo from Octopussy (1983) and his space suit from Moonraker (1979), the orange bikini that Halle Berry wore in Die Another Day (2002), and the Aston Martin DB5 from GoldenEye (1964), which made its grand re-entry in 2012 in Skyfall. The travelling show has been on display in London, Toronto, Shanghai and Melbourne, and is currently exhibiting in Moscow. ‘Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style’ will be in Rotterdam from 12 October 2014 through 8 February 2015. `The Future of Fashion is Now´
‘The Future of Fashion is Now’ in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen displays the innovative visions of more than fifty international fashion designers. From renowned celebrities like Viktor&Rolf and Hussein Chalayan (Cyprus) to rising stars like Craig Green (United Kingdom) and Rejina Pyo (Korea). The world’s latest generation of designers is actively exploring innovation in the concept of ‘fashion’.
They take a critical view of the current fashion system and the role that apparel plays in society. Keenly aware of the sustainability issues in the fashion industry, pushing consumers to buy something new every six months, and driven by countless new technological developments, these designers have crafted new perspectives on what fashion could be. ‘The Future of Fashion is Now’ displays the fashions of tomorrow, emerging on the cutting edge where fashion and art intersect.
‘The Future of Fashion is Now’ incorporates clothing and accessories, but also videos and art installations. The museum brings the widely acclaimed autumn 2013 collection by Viktor&Rolf. With this Japanese zen garden, the fashion duo advocates less urgency and more spirituality in the fashion world. Designer Wang Lei (China) makes traditional Chinese clothing out of woven toilet paper, and Carole Collet (United Kingdom) explores sustainable materials in her experiment with lace patterns that grow from strawberry plants.
Six designers created new pieces exclusively for the exhibition. They share their creative process on the online platform at www.futureoffashion.nl. The exhibition will be on display from 11 October 2014 to 18 January 2015.
The first covered market hall in the Netherlands will be opening in Rotterdam on 1 October. Markthal is Rotterdam’s new food valhalla, featuring food in all its facets. Designed by MVRDV architects, it features an arch that soars 40 metres high over an area where visitors can go shopping, have dinner or sit at a café; the structure also includes residential facilities. The market hall is open seven days a week until 8 p.m. There are 228 homes tucked away in the arches of the Markthal. This combination of market hall and housing is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. The inside of the archway bears the biggest artwork in the Netherlands: The Horn of Plenty, designed by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam.
Europe’s biggest H&M
The H&M fashion chain will be opening a new flagship store in Rotterdam in mid-October. The current store in the Koopgoot shopping area will be expanded to 4500m², making it the biggest H&M store in Europe. The store will be the first H&M branch in the Netherlands to sell all the collections at a single location, from timeless basics to the latest fashion must-haves. The extensive product range includes fashion, accessories and home products for men, women, youth and children. All the limited edition collections will also be available here, and the store will boast the country’s biggest footwear and sports department for men, women and kids. The Passage will also be graced with two new stores from sister companies Weekday (550m²) and Monki (290m²). The official (re-)opening of the three stores is scheduled for Friday 17 October.
