George Clinton to perform at Robin Rotterdam Unlimited

International funk legend George Clinton will be one of the main acts at the multiple-day Robin Rotterdam Unlimited urban festival. The free open-air Clinton concert will take place in the Rotterdam city centre on 25 July 2015. Robin Rotterdam Unlimited (21 through 25 July 2015) celebrates the cultural diversity of Rotterdam. With more than 170 nationalities, Rotterdam is the Netherlands’ most multicultural city. Robin Rotterdam Unlimited showcases this cultural diversity through music, performing arts and exhibitions. The Summer Carnival is the festival’s annual highpoint.

In addition to George Clinton, German reggae superstar Gentleman and his band The Evolution will perform at the festival. The line-up also features La Sra Tomasa from Barcelona, the seven piece band that plays Latin American styles including timba and salsa and combines it with their own Catalonian rumba and a dash of reggae, funk and rap. AM444, the duo that is gaining international acclaim with live tours in countries including China and France, will also take to the stage at Robin Rotterdam Unlimited. AM444 is made up of China’s most talented underground artists, vocalist ChaCha and Dutch producer Jay Soul. The Sranan Gowtu Next Generation segment of the programme will present an evening packed with Surinam music performed by top artists.

This all combines to mean that Robin Rotterdam Unlimited will take festival-goers on a five-day ‘cultural journey of discovery’. ‘Rotterdam is one of the world’s youngest, most dynamic and diverse cities. The boundaries between the city’s wealth of different cultures and nationalities are fading. We see the same thing happening in the performing arts and music and this development is reflected in more and more crossovers. That’s why we want to spotlight this trend through Robin Rotterdam Unlimited,’ says Festival Director Guus Dutrieux. Previous editions of Robin Rotterdam Unlimited attracted around 900,000 visitors.

Summer Carnival
The Summer Carnival Street Parade is one of the highpoints of the festival and is one of the Netherlands’ biggest Caribbean street parties. More than 2,500 dancers in the most spectacular costumes groove through the streets of Rotterdam city centre in a float parade. True to tradition, the ‘Battle of Drums’ brass band competition will take place on the night before the parade. The first edition of the Summer Carnival took place in Rotterdam thirty years ago in 1984. Back then a small group of students of Antillean and Aruban descent decided to celebrate their heritage with this equivalent of carnival in the Caribbean. The parade now attracts 750,000 visitors and is one of the Netherlands’ largest free events.

To celebrate more than three decades of the Summer Carnival, this year’s edition will feature the ‘On the other side of reality’ art exhibition at the TENT art centre in Rotterdam. This exhibition will take place from 25 July through 27 September and will bring together the worlds of the Caribbean carnival and contemporary art. Internationally acclaimed Rotterdam fashion designer Marga Weimans is designing costumes for the parade especially for this occasion.

European carnival parades alliance
Robin Rotterdam Unlimited and Liverpool’s Brouhaha International Festival in Liverpool are working in partnership within the Carnival Arts project. Brouhaha is held every July and boasts live performances and a carnival parade. Carnival Arts focuses on the arts related to carnival (music and making costumes) and unites the carnival communities in the Netherlands and the UK so they can learn from each other and work in cooperation. This alliance will be highlighted at Brouhaha International (first week of July), Edinburgh Jazz Festival (second week of July) and Robin Rotterdam Unlimited.
